TABLETOP ENERGY METER — Emotional & Sensory Check-In Tool for Neurodivergent and Autistic Students

Help your students communicate their energy and focus levels with this easy, engaging Energy Meter Activity—a perfect tool for classrooms, counseling sessions, and sensory-supportive environments.

This printable resource guides students to create a tabletop Energy Meter by coloring each section, cutting along the dashed lines, and folding the page into thirds to form a triangular display.

Once taped, the Energy Meter stands on the desk so students can silently show how they’re feeling in the moment.

Having a visual way to communicate what a neurodivergent student is feeling helps alleviate the energy they put into masking that feeling and can create instructional patterns that accommodate all classmates.

This tool is beneficial for Autistic students, ADHD learners, and all neurodivergent children, as well as general education classrooms looking to build emotional awareness, support self-regulation, and strengthen teacher insight.

Three Energy Levels

🟢 GREEN — “I’m feeling good and following along.”

Students are ready to learn and engaged.

🔵 BLUE — “I’m feeling foggy and not able to listen as well.”

Students may need more processing time, clarity, or reduced sensory input.

🔴 RED — “Nothing feels right, and I can’t pay attention.”

Students are overwhelmed, dysregulated, or stuck—and need a break or support.

Consider using the red or blue meter as a flag to:

  • Stop and ask if there are any questions
  • Take a movement break
  • Review lesson highlights to reestablish key principles (get out of the detail weeds).

How to Use in Class

Pause throughout the lesson for sensory or emotional check-ins. Students simply rotate their meter to the color that matches how they feel. This quick visual scan allows you to:

✔ Gauge classroom readiness

✔ Identify who needs movement breaks

✔ Re-teach or review key points

✔ Provide sensory tools or calming time

✔ Support communication for students who struggle to verbalize needs

For neurodivergent learners, this reduces the pressure of masking and builds trust and autonomy within the classroom routine.

For additional reading: This exercise is based on Dr. Dan Siegel’s “window of tolerance” concept, which describes an optimal zone for living. On either side of that zone of tolerance are two “flavors” of overwhelm- panic and anxiety (red) on one side and detachment or depression (blue) on the other.
