What is a lined seahorse?
A lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) is a species of seahorse found in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea. These unique fish are known for their upright posture, curled tails, and the unusual fact that the male carries and gives birth to the babies.
Is a lined seahorse a fish?
Yes! Even though they don't look like most fish, lined seahorses are true fish. They breathe through gills, have fins for swimming, and live entirely in the ocean.
Where do lined seahorses live?
Lined seahorses live in shallow coastal waters among seagrass beds, coral reefs, mangroves, and sponges. They are commonly found along the Atlantic coast of the United States, throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and in the Caribbean.
What do lined seahorses eat?
Lined seahorses eat tiny marine animals such as shrimp, plankton, fish larvae, and small crustaceans. They use their long snouts to quickly suck up prey.
Why do male seahorses carry the babies?
Male lined seahorses have a special brood pouch where females place their eggs. The father protects the developing babies until they are ready to be born, making seahorses one of the few animals where the male gives birth.
Can lined seahorses change color?
Yes! Lined seahorses can change shades of yellow, brown, gray, orange, and nearly black to blend into their surroundings. This camouflage helps protect them from predators.
What grades is this lined seahorse activity best for?
This printable is designed for students in Grades 2–5, but it also works well for advanced first graders, homeschool learners, marine education programs, aquariums, and nature centers.
